Walking the Thames Path

National Trail from London to the river's source in Gloucestershire

  • from London's Thames Barrier to the rivers's source in Gloucestershire (180 miles)
  • rural countryside
  • Greenwich, Hampton Court, Windsor, Henley, Oxford

This guidebook describes The Thames Path National Trail, a delightful 180 mile (288km) route split into 20 easy stages, and suitable for most abilities.

The Thames, once an important transport route, links a string of historic sites. Walking the Path you will pass Greenwich, the Houses of Parliament and Lambeth Place in the capital itself. Next comes Hampton Court Palace and before reaching Windsor you visit the famous Runneymede where King John signed the Magna Carta.

The water and towpath in the Upper Reaches is both beautiful and wild, populated with cormorants, herons and swans. And the climax of your journey is following the infant Thames, just below the Roman Fosse Way.

  • described in sections between 4 and 16 miles long
  • over 90 per cent of the route is either public footpath or bridleway
  • includes 1:25,000 route map booklet
